hey guys. new to the forum and im very interested in getting my first powerstroke. im looking to get the 7.3. i was wondering what kind of mpg you guys are getting. i have heard of people getting up to 32mpg. i was looking at adding a 4 inch exhaust , cold air intake and a programer.(not sure which one tho). i would like to see around 22 to 25 mpg myself. but of corse more is cool too. thanks ahead of time for any input.
I might get 32 MPG if I go down a long big hill and shut off the motor and cost. You will never see 32 and 25 is far off in the distence also. I am getting 15-16 at the most. On a 2WD you might get 20MPG. When you buy the 7.3 you don't get it for good fuel econimy you get it for the reliability and the ability to run 500K.
Welcome to the forum and poke around some. Tons of information here on the 7.3.
32 mpg's is impossible on a 7.3L PSD and has never been achieved. If someone told you that a Powerstroke did that, they are lying or were told by someone else who was lying. Don't even expect 22-25 mpg's either.
There is a guy that hangs out on another forum named Dave Whitmer who owns a 7.3L Supercab/Shortbed/2WD/6-speed manual 7.3L. He has done extensive (and sometimes drastic) modifications in order to achieve really high fuel mileage. To date, he averages about 27 mpg. His modifications include lowered suspension, smaller tires, 3.08 gearing, front end air dam, a custom built aero bed cover, and some engine modifications. A ton of mods in order to bump up the fuel mileage to where it is today.
The truck configuration (2 door, supercab, crew cab, 2wd, 4x4, automatic, manual, gearing, etc) will play a big role in determining your actual fuel mileage on the road. For example, a regular cab/2wd/6-speed manual/3.73 gears will give you the best mileage since it is the smallest and lightest configuration. If you are really lucky and baby it like no other, you might squeeze out 20 mpg's, and a few guys have been really lucky to get about 22 mpg's on the highway with that configuration (documented actual mileage).
To be realistic, most Powerstrokes will average anywhere from 14-17 mpg's, depending on the setup and modifications.
welcome to FTE! stick around and the brothers and sisters here will have you stylin in no time. In the 20's is possible depending of course on what gear ratio you get and how much stuff you haul around and how heavy you right foot is. Tuners can help also. save your money and get a custom tune from PowerHungry Performance, Tony Wildman or DP Tuner just to name a few. No off the shelf tuner(stuperchip,Edge,Banks etc) will give you the performanxce gains, mileage or absolute fun factor of a custom chip. and the cost is about the same. lots more can be done but you plans will change as the PMS (Powerstroke Modification Symdrome) takes over.
For the most part, I get 15-17 on the average. I have on a recent trip, managed to squeeze out 21mpg. Very rare, at least for me. Most long highway trips comes in at 18-19mpg if I'm easy. It is a lot easier for me to fall to 12-14mpg when I play. So, like Curtis said, if you know someone who is getting 32mpg, half of it is on the back of a rollback......
My MPG's are about where Barry is at. Also, winter fuel tends to knock of a few MPG's too, then I,m around 15.. I don't like winter time for those reasons. Here is where you'll find the truth about our trucks, welcome to FTE
thanks guys. i didnt belive that when i heard 32 mpg. i belive i saw it on some other forum. (cant remember which one) where can you get a custom chip from. i have only heard of them and not about them. i cant wait to get the truck and start gettin her done.
