'98 ranger won't run
1998 3.0 ranger xlt 4X4
about 65-/+ mph it started losing power/slowing down with no throttle response.
eventually after a mile or so it cut off. cranks but will not run.
changed fuel filter ,checked fuel pressure 25psi with key on, 58psi when cranking. checked 3 injestors with noid light, has pulse.
truck will run when you spray starting fluid in the air box.
no mil light and no history codes, i'm using a mac et105 scan tool.
so i ask what do i do now?
Fuel pressure seems alright, I'm not sure about the exact specs.
Might be a timing issue with when the fuel injectors open, that's beyond my troubleshooting ability.
Some things to consider:
- Fuel pressure should build to its highest level rather quickly and not leak down more than 5psi for one minute after the key is shut off.
- Once the fuel system is fully "primed", there shouldn't be any difference between fuel pressure while cranking and fuel pressure with just the key on.
- With regard to fully priming the system in order to get the highest reading for testing purposes, have you tried turning the key off and on a few times to build the pressure up? The pump will (or should) energize for a few seconds each time you cycle the switch.
From what you describe, it sounds like maybe the fuel pressure isn't building up properly and/or it is not holding up properly. A bad check valve or pressure regulator might cause symptoms like that.

where might i find this check valve? and yes if i cycle the key a few times it will build up to 60psi to 63psi with the pressure holding steady for a few minutes before leaking down, i will see how long it takes to leak down when i get home thanks! will report back in a few hours
does the regulator have vaccum going to it and what should the vaccum be i have a vac gauge
1998+ Rangers use what is called a mechanical "returnless" fuel system. Returnless fuel systems have the following characteristics:
(1) there is no return line running back to the fuel tank from the fuel rail;
(2) designed to operate at higher fuel pressure - 64psi (+/-8psi);
(2) the fuel pressure regulator is now in the fuel tank with the pump, not on the fuel rail.

jeebus h k-rist! i need another drink. $363 at the local napa for a "unit" , i think i may take my chances at the junkyard. i know a guy out in west iredell NC that owns stewart salvage. he'll garuntee any part i get , but how long will that one last? i'll change a $50 part a couple times before i come off the hip for almost 400 bucks. might be a few days before i'm back but i'll follow up on this for sure, to help others.
this place is a great place for information for any ford truck, i'm a member of many Harley Davidson forums, and will pass this joint on to anyone having ford truck questions or just looking for a truck forum.
