I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT with 4,0 V-6. I bought it just over a year ago with 49,000 original miles. This truck runs great....except for one issue. Occassionally about every 2-3 weeks, and after setting overnight, it won't start? I can try off & on and it will start after :30 minutes or up to 2-hours. I thought it was a fuel issue, but now I'm thinking spark (fire) issue. I took it to a shop, but they said they can't diagnosis it with the truck not acting up.(?) I'm betting this is some minor problem, and wanted to see if any other Ford Ranger owner has come across this "start when it wants" problem.
Does it crank but not fire off? Or does it not even crank?
Also if it cranks without starting, turn the key but don't start it. Can you hear the pump run for a little bit back in the tank? If you can, and then it starts, get familiar with that sound, and then listen for it when it won't start(if it's cranking).
