no, but once I started it, I went from nervous to charismatic
That is the hallmark of a natural-born public speaker.....
My brother was asked to be my other brother's best man (no problem with that from me by the way)
He asked me for speech advice. I gave him advice similar to what was posted here. Told him that there are tons of examples on the internet. He knew for at least 6 months he had this responsibility.
When we went to the rehearsal dinner, I asked him how his preparations were going. He shrugged it off saying he hadn't given it much thought and was planning to wing it. I mentioned that it probably didn't bode well that he didn't at least have some ideas to draw from, but it was his job not mine, so I didn't harangue him too much.
The wedding goes off without a hitch and the reception starts: The reception host is about to give my brother the mic and a favorite uncle of my new sister-in-law asks if he can just say a few words prior to the best man speech. Assent is given and the guy proceeds to give about a 4 minute speech of remembrance and love that had people laughing and nearly crying. A very, very tough act to follow!
My completely unprepared brother takes the mic and spends about 10 seconds saying "Uhhhhhh, good luck."
The uneasiness in the room was almost palpable.
But then everyone started to dance and all had a great time.
The moral of the story, in my opinion: When given the chance to shine, you want to polish up at least a little bit ahead of time.
Good job, Jake! No video????
I about gave the DJ a heart attack when he was lining us up for introductions and he asked who wanted to go first. I replied first for what oh **** i was supposed to write a speech
