What is the proper "VIN tag" on a passenger car, may not be proper on a older pickup truck. Sometimes the legitimate VIN was stamped in a part of the car. What is often being sold by some of these companies is often a "trim tag." If a police officer sees what he knows to be a "trim tag", and it doesn't match the information he finds on the VIN, he/she will begin a very thorough investigation which may include major disassembly, but does not need to include reassembly.
In somecases, the "official VIN" is stamped somewhere on the vehicle. There is no reason to have a "VIN plate" created for these vehicles.
Yeah, dealing with your local DMV can be a PIA. But less so than having your truck thoroughly towed (at your expense), dismantled (no reassembly required), plus you could be subject to arrest.
The other thing is, don't give the law a reason to need to check VINs. Make sure everything matches such as VIN, title, insurance card and registration. Also, don't use a title for a F150 4x2 supercab for a F250 4x4 reg cab or something like that. .
