I have always had great responses for any of my truck questions here in this forum, so this is where I turned for assistance.
JEFFAFA, NumberDummy, and others of this forum have been a great help to anyone with VIN questions so I figured I'd ask. I was hoping someone could help me with a VIN tag. My parents were traveling and met an older gentleman with a 1956 FORD car (Fairlane?). He told them he was having trouble getting his VIN decoded, and my dad offered to have me try to help him out. Anyway, I haven't had any luck, the VIN tag he sent a picture of doesn't look like any images of 56 Ford car VIN tags that I've found on the net. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Chris
Here's the picture he sent. He recently bought the car. It has Fairlane emblems on it, but he is suspicious as to whether the car is a real Fairlane or not.
The car was assembled by Ford Motor Company of Canada Ltd., strictly for the Canadian market, was not available in the US due to tariffs that existed back then.
Both Ford cars/trucks sold new in Canada from 1946 thru 1965 have unique Canadian VIN's, Rating Plates.
1966/68 Ford & Mercury trucks assembled & sold new in Canada use the same VIN's, Warranty Plates as US trucks. But I'm not sure if the cars followed suit.
When the tariffs were abolished in late 1967, Mercury trucks were cancelled after only a few 1000 1968's were assembled.
The only way the above can be decoded, is by using a Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd. 1956 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog.
Canada? Heck, it might as well be a foreign country.
Ha, NO ******. Sometimes I shake my head at the way things get done up here. Like not being able to buy Dupli-Colour Ford Semi-Gloss Black engine paint cuz it doesn't have the French instructions!!!! I won't forget that one anytime soon.

Is there any really old dealerships up there that might have the old books in some dark dungeon ?
But this Ford was assembled and sold new in Canada and so, has a Canadian only VIN and codes, so...one needs a Canadian Ford parts catalog to decode it.
I let the owner know where his best place to look would be (the 1956 catalogue). Hopefully he finds something. I'm surprised how difficult it is to research old Canadian cars vs. US built cars. Makes me think I should break down and order a Marti Report for my Merc.

1966/68 Ford/Merc trucks sold in Canada use the same VIN, codes on the Warranty Plate as US trucks.
