If it has fluid in it, there is nothing more you can do at home.
Have a shop rebuild it, get a junkyard trans, get a rebuilt one and put it in, or swap in a 6 speed. when mine goes out I want to do the stick shift swap.

How hard is it to put in a ZF6? Is there a lot a adapting to do (besides cutting a hole in the floor) and adding a clutch pedal?

well, there is some wiring to adapt, and you have to get a different drive shaft.
the fly wheel is not the same, so it must be changed. If you want good fit and finish you need to change the gauge panel and column cover.
The 4R100 and zf 6 speed both have a cooler, but I am not sure if they are the same.
I have not looked in to it as much as I want to yet,so I might be missing something.

I had a 4R100 behind a V10 and it lasted 51,000, put in new one rather than rebuild, and make it to 160,000. Change the fluid often is what I heard is the key!

So you had a 2000 that by 2004 you had 460,000 miles on? that is avg. 329 miles a day!
How did you roll it?
It sounds like the harder you work the 4R100 the longer it lasts.

when driving team you can legally log 1100 mi a day. i would normally run 5 to 600 mi a day legally an another 200 off the log. easy to do in a pickup. My tags were rated at 26,000 lb and a few times i was close most of the time i would only have 2000 lbs spa shells the tlrs would run about 20000 to 22000 lbs gross.

i tried to keep from taking a load of logs through the windshield. about 10pm ,log truck had been on the shoulder probably trying to fix his lights pulled back on to the interstate with no/no lights tractor or tlr i topped a rise and all i could see was the end of logs comming at the windshield. cut to left got two wheels on the grass median the 8000lbs on the tlrnpushed the truck around, started to roll ripped the gooseneck off the ball broke 1 chain off tlr pulled other chain loose from tk bed, that slowed the roll tk rolled 3 times in slow motion came to rest on drivers door wearing seat belts THANK GOD only scratches on head BALD ,. wife had glass in forehead an pulled groin muscle. truck still running had to turn key off. about 5 min til emerg crew arrived pulled windshield out we steped out. log truck never slowed and never found out who it was.3 north bound cars saw the whole thing and stopped called 911. we heard one guy that stopped and came to truck say is any body alive in there.

in 2 weeks i had the 350 set up and a new tlr and was on the road again.
quit hauling 2007 sold tlr still have duelly its pd for and with the programer in stage 3 gets 15 to 17 in town and up to 24 hwy at 65 or under cheaper than a new truck payment ant only has 305788mi on clock.

ok, If you put that kind of loads and miles on them, why not use a 6 speed?
so how do you get a job using your pickup to haul stuff like that?
I haul scrap and do tractor work, but would like more to do with my truck in my time between jobs and scrap hauling.

I am partial to automatics, and they stand up pretty well now days if you dont abuse them. i would rather had an allison than the ford but the 7.3 psd was a better engine than the duromax at the time i was shopping.

I had been driving semi's from '85 til '98. made a lot of contacts and talked to a lot of 'HOT SHOT' drivers on the CB and in truck stops. I done the paper work got my DOT and MC numbers [federal and state] takes about 6 wks. you have to spring for comercial insurance before you submit the paper work. ITS CALLED YOUR 'AUTHORITY' to operate a trucking company. You apply for comercial tags through which state you live in.
It would probably cost close to 8 grand to just get your authority now. it cost me 3500 in 98. when the Insurance got up to almost $9000 a year you had to stay on the road 7days aweek to make it pay and 9-11 really put a crimp in business. I was burning over $2500 a month in fuel. you have to eat and sleep, the cab of a dually doesn't count as a sleeper .so you have to hit a few motels. you have to keek a log book and they do look at them in the weight stations, you have comercial plates and drive by a station it starts at a $100 fine.
You can lease on to some companys and dont need your own authority ,or tags.
go on line google 'hotshot trucking'.... I got tired of 6 an 7 days a week and sleeping in the cab [had a crew cab ] back seat was pertty roomy. But it get old after 6 years with no home life to speak of.

my dad was a hotshot driver, hauled a lot of oil field pipe. when the market went down in the 80,s, he had no more work.
I would like to find out more, but one big thing first.
I am 17.Is there an age limit for the insurance?
I finished high school 2 years early, and I am restoring a F350,280ZX and ford N9 before I start mechanics school, and I have done 30k miles of towing in the last year, and taken 126.5k of metal to the scrap yard , but I still need more $$$ for my 3 restorations.
