6637 Mod

I happened to read through the recent topic about CAI's. I see that several of you guys say the K&N is no good. I've got the K&N Gen. II FIPK. It seems to have worked fine for me so far. I'll have to check for dusting. What goes into the 6637 mod, and whats the cost to convert to it? Is this one of those BIY things? If so, what do you need to build it?

I believe you can just shove the 6637 filter on the end of your K&N intake tube and be done. If you've got a CAI box, you may need to remove that to get it to fit. Check fleetfilter.com and enter 46637 in the search box. They usually have the best price on the filters.

That filter looks almost exactly like the air filters on the HMMWV's... So I should be able to just buy the filter and clamp it right on?

It will clamp on to a 4" tube. That's the size of your K&N, right?

6637 fits the K&N cold air kit but just barely. Stand by for why we generally don't like K&N.

Results of a K&N in a stock airbox. This is the "clean" side.

Here is a CAI cone-type with dust all in it too (look close at the finger swipe inside the tube):

Wasn't that F350-6 when searching for a wifey rig? Either way, goes to show that not all filters are the same! For me with mixed driving conditions (highway and backwoods dusty **** roads) 6637 + Pete's cover = no dust.

No. This was my old roomate from active duty. He brought it home, saw this, then took it back the next day. Ended up with a CTD... LOL

Good memory Chase, but no, that one wasn't mine. My pictures were from a stock set up with a broken tab and a broken ear on the stock set up. It looked much worse (these pictures don't show the grass falling out from above the filer when I removed the lid.

The stuff laying around the box is what came out when I removed the lid, before lifting the filter up. This truck was at a Ford dealer lot that had already gone through that so called 72 point inspection. I would have thought air filter would have been one of those points somewhere along the way. Too bad. It was a nice truck otherwise.

Thanks Chris. Funny thing when I bought my truck. The dealership rep I dealt with said they dealt with diesels and 7.3's quite often, in fact he was somewhat savvy (said he knew my truck was stock exhaust, the one next to it had a straight pipe and other mods, etc etc. and seemed credible). He also told me they ran each rig through an inspection, which my truck had been through but wasn't 100% (brake vibrating... bad rotors). However, they offered my truck at a low price... under book. I drove it some, liked it, and quizzed them. First thing I did was pop the intake and found the dust in it... I told him what I had seen, and that it made me nervous. Needless to say, I dealt with the sales manager next, told him my concerns, and made a lowball offer on their already low asking price which he accepted. Hence I'm now a Powerstroke owner, whether you guys like it or not
Long story short, my truck runs great and I feel lucky to have it and be part of this group. No, I would not buy a truck with grass in the air intake I hope this makes sense... at least it does to my inebriated self

Makes sense to my inebriated self. I spent enough time looking at that particular truck ( too stupid to check the intake first) that one of the mechanics walked out and asked what all I was looking for and taking pictures of. Had to have pictures to make sure momma approved. The salesman walked back up just after I discovered the intake issue. I told him if he had the mechanic pull the intake tube and prove to me the turbo was not dusted we could talk. The salesman said he had pulled his horse trailer with it the day before with no issues. The mechanic said, no, I bet we find a dusted wheel.

My guess is they changed the filter, cleaned up the intake, and sold it to some poor individual who has probably had to replace the motor by now.
