Have a 96 F350, and have put 3 cam sensors in it in less than 1200 miles. I ckecked out the harness and plug at the sensor and they are fine. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Also breaks up if you get on it hard between 2100 and 2700 rpm. It smellslike unburned fuel all the time but doesn't smoke.
That can be normal in some extreme cases. They can be bad right out of the box. At least they are much cheaper now...even at the dealer.
You need to get it on a good scanner just to be sure it's a CPS.
Look at the end of the CPS for damage. If your cam is walking back and forth excessively it may hit the CPS. Might need to be shimmed. Even if it doesn't hit it may cause an erratic signal....
