I have 2001 powerstroke SD Pickup with 84,000 miles the cam sensor has never been changed. Should I change it or wait to it fails?

i would say to have one on hand, and just wait to change it..... they can go bad with no warning though.... they are easy enough to change along the road. have you had any bad symptoms?

well, i have seen two of my buddies have thiers go bad.... and both of them went bad, and the engine stalled as they were driving down the road. luckily they were able to both pull off to the side in a safe spot. when they tried to start them again, it would not idle at all, and would only run if they had their foot on the gas quite a bit, and die after about 30 seconds. the wierd thing is that they both had it happen within a week of each other. i forget what it cost at the dealer, but some parts stores list a "crank" sensor..... and they are the same thing, but a lot cheaper than fomoco. its all up to you as to whether you should change it or not...... i wouldnt change it myself until i had to. with my 5.4L i always keep a spare COP for its notorious problem. but only change it when needed. good luck.

I had my CPS fail at about 50,000 miles but I have a friend who has over 160,000 on his PSD and it has never failed. I agree with the advise to buy a spare CPS and keep it along for when or if it does fail for you. I have almost 90,000 on my PSD now and have a spare CPS in the glove box.
