If you've put all 189,000 miles on yourself, and haven't replaced the cam position sensor yet, you've done well. They typically go out around 100,000 miles. There was a running change in the design of the cps during the '96 model year, so the person behind the counter at the International dealer might want to know whether yours takes the new one or the old one. The difference between the two is the material the electrical contacts are made of, so either way, get the new one. They're about $85 at International, or you can get the exact same part, in the exact same bag from your Ford dealer for twice that.

They are notorious for going out. Could happen when the truck is new like mine did a 4,000 plus miles, or could happen at 189,001 miles, or any where else for that matter. No way to tell. I carry an xtra one with me in case it happens again. Easy fix, and if it were to go bad somewhere out in nowhere, it could cost a mint to get a tow and have Ford replace it. You can get them new on e-bay for $70-$80 plus shipping.

Spud, Bring your engine s/n with you to IH. The new cam sensors will not work in the engines that require the old sensors. Yes the terminal metal is different but so is the wiring inside the sensor. I have tried the new style sensor and it didn't work so I tried a new old style sensor and it did work. These sensors go out often enough that most people recomend carring a spare with you.

Mine just went out last week. I only have 65,000 miles on my '99. The other code my computer was putting out was "E/G/R Pressure Valve ***'y. So the dealer replaced that too. Anyone know what this is? It is my understanding that the Powerstroke doesn't have and EGR like most gas engines do.

What are the symptoms of such occurance going out, if any?

Also -stupid question here- but do ALL POWERSTROKE DIESEL's have a cam sensor?

When mine went out, it was a really hot day (105+) and the idle started getting funky. I got on the freeway to drive to the dealership and the truck acted like it was misfiring really bad (which diesels don't do since they have no ignition) and it wouldn't go over 35 mph, then the engine just completely died.

There are a lot of different symptoms. My truck would die at idle when the engine was at normal operating temp. When it was cold it ran fine. It did this for about two days. then it finally wouldn't start.
