Is there a way to test the sensors without the computer? If so you can test it directly at the back while in place.

let me get this straight, the only thing that effects the speedo is the VSS in the rear diff? what do the left and right wheel sensors do? are they ABS only? the only info i have from the dealer is that the wheel sensors and the VSS are all tied together with the ABS, one of those things go bad can cause the all the problems? any one concur? i just dont know what to do. and i am absolutly sure its somthing stupid small.

ya know thinking about it, when i pulled out the old VSS, there was grease, not oil on the sensor. is this right?

The two front sensors work with the VSS to moderate the ABS function. The front 2 sensors are only used for ABS referrence, nothing else. The rear is used for ABS referrence as well as for the speedo. As I had posted earlier, if there was a problem with either or both of the front sensors, the only thing that would happen is the ABS light on the dash would light up. If there was a problem with the rear sensor, not only would the dash light come on, the speedo wouldnt work, and the OD light would flash.

I copied and pasted this post from another that I read a long time ago.
Great story, but read the technical part of it. I believe it has the answer you seek.

It started out this morning,,,truck comes in,,check engine light on.Ok,I take the scanner out on the lot and scan it. Hmmm, rear speed sensor failure. No big deal,I know exactly what the problem is,,the wires are going to be broken where they leave the frame and loop down to the axle. So,I go back in the shop, grab my soldering iron, shrink tube, strippers and solder,,and head back out to the lot. I figured it would be quicker to just lay under the truck on the lot, then it would to bring it in,,set up the lift,,raise it,,and then fix it.

So,,there I am,,under the truck,,minding my own business, reach up,,separate the loom, and then lay my head back down. As soon as I do,,,BAM! This *&%$#$ kitten attacks me! Came out of nowhere! Hit me when I wasn't looking! Startled me so bad that,,,,(did I mention I was under a truck?) I jumped up,,,hit my head on the axle so hard it almost knocked me out! MAN! THAT HURT! So,,I lay there for a minute,,,dazed and confused,,,all the time that stupid kitten is laughing! Well,,I finally get my senses back,,wipe the blood off my face, and proceed to fixing the truck. The whole time,,this kitten just sits there contently watching me. I crawl out,,rescan the truck to verify the repair, and then walk back into the shop. That little @#$%$# follows me!

I walk up to the service counter,,my boss says,,MY GOD! What happened to you? I try to explain,,,(didn't work),,,for the rest of the day I was the receiving end of jokes like,,,Whats the matter old man,,cant handle a little pu##y? Oh well,,,I dish it out most of the time,,so I guess today was my turn. Oh,,,the kitten? He?She?It,,decided to hang out with me all day. When I went to lunch,,I bought him? Her?It? a cheeseburger. That poor kitten wolfed it down so fast that it was obvious it hadnt eaten in awhile. Ok,,so I am a softy for animals,,I cant help it. Yup,,I brought him?her?it? home! And now he?Her?It? is sitting on my lap as I type this. Stupid cat,,STOP LAUGHING!
Here is the link to the whole thread. I want to find out what happened to the kitten.

ok, removed all the loom on the rear speed sensor wiring and inspected for cracks and breaks. no problems.

I had an ABS light that was on for a year. I finally decided to fix it last fall. I had replaced both front hub/bearing assemblies so I knew the ABS sensors up front were fine. I decided to pull the sensor off of my rear diff to see if that was the problem. Well in trying to get the sensor out of the diff I ended up breaking it into two parts. the "cap" end of the sensor busted off.
Here's where I'm confused. Everyone keeps saying that rear sensor is for the speedo. Well, I ended up putting what was left of my sensor back into the diff till I could drive to town and get a new one. My speedo still worked fine, as it always had. I replaced the sensor with a new one and my ABS light went out and hasn't been back. So my question is, does that rear sensor really have anything to do with the speedo? It sure didn't seem like it on my truck....

I actually had this same problem too. it drove me nuts. there are two sensors on the transmission that are also speed sensors, and i changed them both out. still nothing. then i checked the ground wires under the hood, which was a little rusted. i cranked down on it after i cleaned it up, and the problem went away.

i cant remember what those speed sensors were called, but one is on the front drivers side and one is on the tail end.

hope this helps a bit

Tom

If every thing else is checking out good, drop the cover on the rear diff., check the tone ring, I've seen them crack before.

Ya need to change the rear fluid anyway.
