I have a 2004 f350 V8 that I just recently purchased. Today I noticed oil leaking out from around the top of the oil filter (which was corroded). I replaced the oil and filter today (which was EXTREMELY tight) but it still leaks. When I put the new one on, I hand tightened it pretty good but ended up wrenching it pretty tight because it was still leaking. The old gasket is definitely off so I’m not sure what to do. Do I need to replace the part that the oil filter screws into? and if so, what is it called and where is the best place to order it? Any help would be great.
if you have a oil cooler which looks like you should that is what you screwed the filter on to. The seal on the cooler is not serviced by itself, so if it is leaking from the cooler replace the cooler F8UZ6A642HA check my site for price.
There is a gskt for the adaptor to block so check that also for possible leak.
I had the same problem with my 2002 F250 5.4 and believe the problem has to do with the gasket material of the oil filter. I made the mistake of using a Fram and it leaked like a sieve from the gasket. I now use Quaker filters and haven't had a repeat of the problem. If you compare the gasket material of the two you'll see the Quaker (and Motorcraft) gasket appears and feels to be of a much higher quality.

This is a relatively common thing - there is an O-ring between the cooler and block.
Are you positive it is leaking between the filter and oil cooler? - or -
From 2" higher between the cooler and where it mounts? It is hard to see unless you look very close. A mirror helps.
To tighten the cooler, you put a big (12mm? 14mm?) hex drive up inside the oil filter nipple and give her a gentle cinch.
Great picture, Ed!
6A642 is the cooler, and the o-ring we are referring to is sandwiched between it and 6881.
You tighten 6L626 from below to snug it up. The bottom end of 6L626 is the filter mounting nipple.
so what do you do to stop the OIL FILTER from leaking? have a99 f250 leaking there & its definitely leaking out of the filter , put 3 filters on & it wont stop
that's what i need to know. i may have missed something here but i have read several different things on this and no one really said what the repair was. thanks again!
