So I just changed the oil on my truck I had a ford motorcraft filter on there and replaced it with a Fram filter ( only because that's what was on the shelf at the big W store ) I drove it to town and back once ( 35 miles round trip )
I was going to add a trickle charger to my truck as It will be sitting for a while and I was laying under the front of the truck trying to fish the power cord down and I looked back and see I had Oil spray going down the center of my truck . So I thought dam my filters not tight as when I looked at it , had oil streaks coming down it. So I checked it was tight , would not move. So I wiped if off with a rag and it looks to me as if the filter is leaking at the top seam . were the filter is crimped . I mean you pay 20 to 23$ for a filter and it leaks... there's not way I can take it off and take it back to the store. a filter that is oil soaked . I am going to replace it but before I do I am going to see if I can get the leak on video
It is not all that unusual for find some oil streaks running down a new filter if you didn't give everything a chance to drip and wiped well before installing the new filter. I have been there done that. Another cause could be if when you pulled off the old filter the rubber filter gasket stuck to the truck rather than came off with the filter. If that is the case you are running two different rubber gaskets will cause leakage. Check the old filter to make sure the rubber seal is still on it, if not you need to check your truck.
For what it's worth, you can order Motorcraft oil filters off of Amazon for $14.95 each.

I did that once with a gasser. It wasn't a leak, it was a gusher.

Yep, if those two rubber gaskets seal together and make one or the other pucker you can get a really good flow of Texas Gold all over the place. This is however a lesson that you usually only have to learn one time and one time only.
I did wipe off old oil, and cleaned gasket seating area cause I was afraid of leave it dirty. Also I watched the old gasket drop into the oil drain pain. and its not just streaks down the oil filter the under side of my truck has oil splatter down it the full length of the truck ( not bad but I can see it ) . I also checked to make sure oil filter was tight.. it is , that's when I noticed the leak is coming from the lip at the top where the filter is crimped together , the filter itself is leaking not the filter to truck seal.
I googled it to see if anyone else had this issue and one post on a 7.3 forum came up , where a guy had the same issue
I will film it today and upload to YouTube and post a link here
see this guys post here same problem ( 9th post down) :https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...at-filter.html
I am not knocking the OP for using Fram - in fact, if I had to change the oil and that was ALL that was on the shelf, I would have done the same thing.
IMHO, I am with Monty - I used Fram a couple of times in the 1990s and back then they had a good rep. Something changed as I noticed pretty quickly back then they were not good any more. I used to always take my filters apart to look for metal.
Anyways, I only use motorcraft on 6.7... I order ahead of time so I always have one on hand, same thing with the fuel and air filter. They are not more than the other brands and the tech at the dealer won't bat an eye if there are any issues and they see a motorcraft filter...
Not that Ford/Dealer can deny a warranty solely on the basis of a non-OEM brand filter - but it takes the argument that the filter caused the issue.
I have changed the oil twice on my 2015 6.7 and have found that the oil filter has to be a lot tighter than you would normally put it on other engines or it will leak. I have to use the filter wrench and tighten the crap out of it, but you do get some residual oil from the top after a change, that is normal. I always use the motocraft filter so they can't deny a warranty claim for something stupid like that, I have heard of that happening.
Personally, I wouldn't put a Fram filter on my lawn tractor. They are just such crap. Google Fram Filter Failure and you will find a TON of this type of thing. If it was time for an oil change and the store only had Fram, I'd go home, order a Motorcraft from Amazon for $14.95, and wait two days. On top of them being a decent filter, they are the cheapest out there. A rare combo.
I also used to be a big advocate for using Fram filters, but that was 20+ years ago when they were good quality. All I've ever used in the past 20 years have been WIX brand for the cummins and OEM for everything else.
