Here's my problem, I changed the oil the other morning, drove it to town to run some errands, and on the way home, bout a mile from home, I started smelling oil. Got home and shut the truck off, looked under it, and there was oil slowly running off of my oil filter. Crawled under and made sure it was tight, wiped it off, and it was still leaking. Bought another filter today and put it on, and at first it didn't leak at all, shut the truck off and checked the oil level, started it again, and here comes the leak again.
Any idea's on what could be the problem? I made sure the housing was all wiped clean, both times I put the new filters on. I can't see getting 2 bad filters in a row, I even went so far as to get them from 2 different places.
I know it is not double gasketed, as the filters that I have taken off of the truck all have the rubber gasket on them still. Also, both times that I have put the new filter on, I waited till all the oil had drained off, and wiped the housing perfectly clean, paying particular attention that it had no dirt or anything on it before I put the new filter on. I also made sure to lube both of the new filter's rubber gaskets before installing them. I made sure to spin the filter on by hand, till the gasket contacted the housing, and then an additional half turn, just as I have done to all the vehicles that I have ever changed the oil on.
So what gives?
does the housing have a crack in it or something? Doesn't really make sense. if it aint double gasketed it shouldn't leak.
I couldn't see any cracks. And this is strange, as it didn't leak until I decided to change it. I have never had this problem with this or any other vehicle before. Tomorrow I will get another filter < 3 rd one >, and take it off again, and look for cracks again.
Your oil cooler adapter may be loose. If there are lines running from the filter mount, they are hooked to a cooler. This "adapter" per sey, is heldon bu a large allen-headed bolt. Once you remove the filter, look up, into the center of the adapter and you will see the bolt. Tighten this bolt.

Thanks for the info, will check this when I take the filter off again. If this is just a lil loose, would this cause oil to slowly leak from the filter? The oil is slowly running off of the filter at it's lowest point ( from the top of the filter, the driver side is lower than the passanger side of the filter.)
If you look at it and don't find anything wrong just tighten it up more. I've had this happen before and have even had to put the wrench on it to crank it tighter. It won't hurt a thing (other than making it harder to take off) to tighten it on down. Sometimes they even loosen up later if you don't tighten them enough to begin with.

I've had problems with leaking oil filters also on my 2002 F250 5.4, twice with a dealer installed Ford filter and once with a Fram (worse). I do my own oil changes since off warranty and I'm presently using Quaker State filters with no problems at all. I think the problem lies with the gasket material, you can feel the differences. The Quaker filter has a harder and smoother gasket as compared to the Fram which is soft and "rougher" If for no other reason I won't use Fram filters anymore on any of my vehicles after noticing seepage on my '89 5.0 also.
You stop short of saying that you visually verified that there's no old gasket left in. I'd do two things right off. Get a good flashlight and actually look into the area where the gasket goes, and even go so far as to slide another gasket up into that position so there's no question that the old one(s) are gone.
Also, look carefully for debris in this area hat might be deforming the gaskets.
could it be leaking from a oring above the oil filter? on my 02 7.3l i had a leak which i thought was the oil filter, but it was the oring on the back of the motor above the oil filter. im sorry i cant remember the official name of the o-ring
