I'm thinking about getting the Pertronix Igniter 2 Ignition,45,000 volt Flamethrower coil and the 7mm black stock look plug wire kit for the rebuilt 352 on my 66. I'm not so much concerned about high performance, but am interested in better performance. Think it's worth the $165 it would set me back? Also, if I did go with that package, should I get a new distributor, and if so, what would you recommend? Thanks for the input. BTW, I've finally got to ground zero witht the tear down--just the frame. Hope to be posting pictures of the frame after the POR 15 painting tomorrow.
I can not speak for experience on the Pretronix unit as I have never installed one.
I can however say electronic ignition is the way to go. I personally went with the Mallory Uni-Lite conversion kit and used it in my old distributor when I had a 360 in my 65. I also went with the MSD coil and MSD 6-AL control box to give my ignition system a little more boost. I really like the MSD box and I noticed my pickup started better with it on there, even when I had the old points on there.
My thoughts are if you are going to spend the money on a conversion kit plus the cost of a new distributor, why not buy a mid 70's factory Ford distributor for a 360/390 or even an after market setup? I think you can have a Mallory Uni-Lite distributor for what you would spend on the conversion kit and getting a re-man points distributor from your local parts house.
If you distributor is not worn and turns freely I would just keep it and add the aftermarket conversion kit. If your current points distributor is worn I would consider purchasing one with electronic ignition already installed. just my thoughts.
In my 66 i run the Pertronix set up. the truck came with a Mallory unilight ignition just like Jeff has..... msd box and all..... turned out the wires were bad between the box and dizzy on my truck so i bought the Pertronix for it, Jeff's right.....it will start better for you, I like mine, If you change yours out dont forget to re-gap the plugs to 45
Definitly go with the pertronix ignition. I had mine for awhile now on my other motor and it was great, I also have msd ignition and an msd blaster coil. But I had the petronix by itself just to see the difference and it was amazing. I now however have upgraded to a different distributor from a 78 ford truck that already had electronic ignition.
