But when the DMF is complete and just wore out they have an even beat to the rattle.
The only time you'll get the noise like a quarter in a dryer (A random beat) is if some part is loose and floating around in the bell housing.
Mat J,
I would not run the truck till you find out, if it is a part floating in the bell housing, there is the potential of breaking the housing or worse.
You could probably rent out that 90 RPM starter to guys swapping out their E40Ds.
With that low of a speed you could tighten all of the flex plate-to-TC bolts as they came by and wouldn't have to bar-over the engine.
But back to the original problem, there is an access cover at the bottom of the bell housing that is held in by 4 bolts. Drop that off and I bet you will get some clues (they might just fall out).
I had the weight come off a pressure plate during the test drive after I installed a new clutch kit. It sounded like that for a couple seconds then a louder clunk when I got stopped the corner of the weight was sticking through the access plate.
Thanks for all the info, the bell housing inspection plate is missing so that narrows that down. I took off the side cover on the zf5 just to change the oil anyway and look inside which everything looked fine.
My flywheel does have springs in it and they dont appear to be missing any. I take it that means its a dual mass flywheel and thats the problem. I dont know anything about them so im going to have to do some searching.
It does go away at 1100 rpm but is back at 1000 rpm and if I put it in gear its loud and a little louder from N to 1st or reverse.
Also im not sure what type of oil came out of the zf5 but it wasnt red and didnt appear to be atf actually was slightly yellow like some type of hydrollic fluid or gear oil, the clutch was still too but I though it was just the way it was. Im going to put in some napa synthetic aft and see how it does but will that aft mixing with the little bit of oil left over harm anything. Would I be best off running it for a tank of gas and putting in new aft again?
I don't think you'll have to worry about that last little bit of oil in there, I wouldn't anyway.
Some guys have been running 5W30 synthetic oil in their ZF5s for a lot of miles with out any problems. It usually quiets them down too so that may be why it had oil in it.
I believe regular motor oil can harm the synchros but a full synthetic should solve that problem.
Others have warned that oil doesn't cool the trans well enough.
Your probably best off to run the synthetic ATF since that is what the "factory" recommends.
After saying all of that I've been running 5W30 Mobile 1 full synthetic in my ZF5 for about 3 months now.
I've ALWAYS ran it in the Getrag 360 (German 5-speed) in my Dodge and that supposedlly "horrible" trans. is as good, quiet and tight as the day it was new. It was factory filled with 5W30 oil though not ATF like the ZF.
There may come a day when I regret NOT following the recommendations.
Thanks I got some valvoline high mileage aft synthetic base oils not full synthetic but it was half the price of the mobile one full. Ill see how it does and if not swap it out for the mobile.

If you're sticking with ATF, which is probably smart, any brand full synthetic should be fine.
Yeah I am almost positive its the flywheel. its right in that area and a steady noise. it goes away at 1100 rmp. I heard another truck at work yesterday doing the exact same thing too.
