So, I just bought an '05 Excursion 6.0 4x4 (build date 8/05) with 57k miles for $18.5 in Fresno. I used a checklist with about 100 points to check and for the most part, everything looked ok so I bought the truck. This is my first diesel so I know I have a huge learning curve ahead of me.
So, here's my question- on my drive home with the truck (~180 miles), I noticed that there was an ever so subtle hissing sound whenever I tap on the accelerator pedal either underway or stopped. I've heard turbos on other vehicles but unsure if this is normal or some sort of an exhaust leak. To my uneducated ears, it sounded like this hissing sound remained after the turbo spooled up and down.
A quick search through the forums with keywords "exhaust leak" pulled up several threads but most sound much more serious than mine.
Btw, the one thing that I noticed was an engine oil leak around the oil pan. I suspect that re-torqueing the bolts and drain plug should take care of this (or replace the washer)... knock on wood. Anyone know off hand if the PSD warranty covers oil leaks such as this?
Thanks in advance and to all the moderators that helped me run the Oasis reports.
Engine warranty is 5yrs./100,000 miles from date of 1st sale. You may still be under warranty. If so have them check for egr cooler leak or blown head gaskets. Both have hissing noise as symptoms. Is there any puking, coolant leakage, at the degas bottle cap. Possibly defective cap also. Good luck.
Ok, I am getting worried now... found this in and around my degas bottle. The last picture with my finger is a swap at the bottle of the reservior. Your thoughts?
I should add that the truck has good power, smooth acceleration and idle, no smoke or odd odor coming from the exhaust, and no visible signs or evidence of coolant leaks from passenger side. It fires right up from cold and runs good. I know this is impossible to diagnosis over a forum but just thought I'd post it up in case anyone else have similar experience.
I can't find the video for the tea kettle noise. Would you use that to describe it? I had it and it was caused due to a bad cap. I had some puking but it wasn't caked like yours.
You can try buying a new cap and see if it fixes it. You'll need to put the truck under hard load to really test it. Otherwise take her in and tell them your getting a tea kettle noise, and your puking coolant. It will be covered under the warranty. If it ends up being head gaskets install ARP headstuds. If it is the EGR cooler make sure they replace the oil cooler too. You might also consider an EGR delete.
Good luck and welcome to the forum. Make sure and read through the tech folder!
if you still have warranty, get it to the dealer asap, if not try the updated degas cap 1st. It's a cheap item compared to the other scenarios. Make sure you clean all the crap off the bottle neck be4 installing the new cap.
Thanks everyone for lending an ear. I took my wife and 2 yr old to Discovery Kingdom (aka Marine World) today for a test drive (~60 mi rt) and to listen for it again. I would describe it more as a scrapping sound like a bad bearing or when you wear down your brake pads and the metal sensor begins to scrap against the rotor. It doesn't sound like a kettle and the noise only appears when I am on the accelerator even when just a tad.
I'll try your suggestions (new updated cap) and clean the crap off. I think it is Ford Gold (a tinge of light orange color).
Thats not good. Take it in and get it taken care of under warranty. If its your turbo grinding and it breaks in to pieces your going to have have a lot more serious issues.
Also you might leave the gunk on there, and ask tell them about it. You might get lucky enough to get some new headgaskets
Little late now, but I didn't see you mention if you got an oasis report. It would be worth running one just to see what all has been done to the truck. The Oasis Request Thread is a sticky at the top of our section.
Will do, sounds sensible.I'll drop the vehicle off to dealer for a check this week. Hopefully it isn't anything serious and more importantly, if it is, that it is covered under warranty
I should mention that the sound is subtle and I really have to listen for it. Also, it is only audible when the vehicle is warmed up.
I did receive an Oasis report from the generous folks on this board. From what I can tell, it went in on 2/23/06 for 2 recall repairs. However, I can't tell what was done. Does anyone know what this might be or if I am looking in the right lines?
Also, anyone have recommendations on a good dealership in the SF Bay Area for warranty work? A quick search on Yelp and Google is very discouraging and all I see are mostly complaints.
Not many dealers left. Depending where you live. PM me if you want and maybe I can point you in a direction. I have heard good things about the Brentwood dealer. Still family run. Even the service department. Might want to join the NORCAL forum here for more recommendations.
