The one ball stud that my 97 Explorer tailgate hydraulic cylinder attaches to broke. The cylinder is still good after 180K miles. Looks like I need to replace the other three studs also.
Any suggestions for repair or where I might be able to find replacement studs?
It's all spot welded to the body, so can be an expensive repair. I had one to break off on my 2000xlt. I found a round head screw, ground the head down to the shape of the ball. Drill out the old stud and taped it for the screw. Screwed it in with some loctite. It's held up for over a year now.
Your procedure is basically the same method that I used. I cut off the old ball stud and punched it out. Ground down the head of a bolt to fit the hole in the hydraulic cylinder was able to get a nut to fit in the slot between the taligate and flange. Works like a charm.
I did grease up all ball studs, hopefully to prolong their life.
there are 2 or 3 different "standard" ball sizes. you can buy these studs at places like McMaster Carr. THey have a web site, if your interested in parts.
