The tailgate window lifting cylinders have finally failed on my '91 Explorer XLT. (I'm getting a lot of knots on my head this week) Can anyone offer any tips on replacing them? Will I need any special tools? Where would the best place be to find new or used replacements? Have these been covered by a recall?
Thanks, Marc
It only takes a few minutes to replace those cylinders, and some degree of care. I don't remember having to use any special tools at all. I know there was a recall at one time having to do with the mounts that these cylinders are attached to. Because the mounts on my cylinders broke, the resulting damage sprung the hinges at the top of the door and the Ford people had to replace the door shell. The bill was around 2500 bucks! Ford ate it. The cylinders are gas charged so when the mounts fail it can be a dangerous situation. Good luck.
i recently had to replace the lifters on my hood and tailgate windows. did not need any special tools. just a flat head screwdriver to free up the clamp that secures the connector/arm of the gas cylinder to the window or hood. it may be a 2 person job tho, just someone to hold the tailgate window so it doesnt bend or worse, break, while u are installing the cylinders. i got the arms at autozone for around $25 each, and they come with instructions for installation. eventually they just wear out. but i do believe there was a recall on the tailgate ones, but not for my X, perhaps for yours.
