The oil flows from the pan through the pickup tube to the pump, out to the oil cooler thru the filter then to the rest of the engine. The only exception is right at start there is a short circuit to feed the HPOP reservoir without going thru the filter.

I do not know how long it takes for the filter to fill but its pretty fast. You would have oil pressure faster prefilling the filter no doubt. But imo there is neglible gains prefilling the filter.

I don't want to steer anyone away from prefilling though. I think it is a good thing I just don't do it.

Just some food for thought though. The Wix 1734 filter is rated at 30 GPM. That per MINUTE. Our trucks flow a lot of oil through the system. Perhaps I will time oil pressure times one of these days. Not by the stock gauge though as its not in the correct spot ot get a good picture of what is going on at the filter.

Pump fills filter then from filter out to bearings. With a hot engine it doesn't take long for the bearings to wipe the oil off the journals as the oil system is pressurizing. A lot of engines that I work on sometimes the oil filters are remote mounted plus can have two or more filters so it can take a bit for the system to pressurize so for me it has become habit to pre fill the filters

In the grand scheme of things I don't think the one start every 3-5K will matter compared to the hundreds of cold starts the vehicle sees between oil changes.
hey TJ, just dont fill it full then it wont spill while wobbiling the thing into place.

who ever thought an oil filter tilted 4 degrees was a good idea is an idiot.

Well thanks for the explanation and I agree that prefilling is good thing, maybe Im going to do it next time. but I would like to know the results of the oil pressure times.

i never pre fill the filter on any thing i have ever worked on don't see why it would matter unless it's a remote mount unit. but you could always but the filter on empty pull a fuse and crank until you see oil pressure and then no mess and still no dry start up
