alright fellers got an opinion one for ya. so how many of you change your own oil or have it changed for ya? if you do change your own oil do you preload your new oil filter with a quart or so before putting it on?
I think that you will find that most of us change our own oil and I would assume that most if not all know the importance of pre-loading the filter. Saves wear and tear.
I change mine and fill the filter before installing it.Tim, why don't you fill your filter beforehand?
I don't like to spill oil when trying to spin the filter. Also with the angle of the filter its a lot easy to get the threads started with it empty. On the hundreds (may thousands?) of vehicle I have changed the oil I don't fill the filter.
In the grand scheme of things I don't think the one start every 3-5K will matter compared to the hundreds of cold starts the vehicle sees between oil changes.
well there actually is importance in pre-loading the filter. been workin on tractors since i was knee high to a grasshopper and have always preloaded the filters on them cause they are fairly similar to the diesel engine in a truck. regardless the worst noise you ever want to hear is a 500 horsepower tractor on a dry start especially when you see the damage it did that next week cause some yahoo you work with tore it up
I guess I might be the lone wolf here.....Perhaps my 15 years of experience with auto, HD and AG hasn't taught me the value of prefilling yet.....My dad's 35 years hasn't taught him either. I guess we are slow learners.
I do prefill fuel filters though. Unless they have hand pumps. Except CAT's. Their injectors don't like the stray chance of dirt getting past the filter.
So what are the facts and the theory here? I have a question, how does the oil flow inside the motor at startup?, I thought that the main reservoir is the OIL PAN and from there the oil pump suction it and then what? How does the filter fills and how long does it take to do it? If I get a good explanation about that, maybe I will pre fill the filter in the way that no to damage the engine. I agree with TJ
Correct me if I'm wrong but by prefilling the filter the engine develops oil pressure that much faster. I always prefill my bike filter unless the filter is laying on its side.
