A tanker support unit is essentially a mini pumper that has a very high pumping capacity ( in the ball park of 1000 gpm or greater) that is set up next to the local water supply ( ie lake, river, etc.)and is used for drafting and filling up the tankers. The air unit is probably self explanatory. The air units respond to all working fires to refill scba on scene.
Now I feel a little dumb.... DUH !!! All I had to do was think NIMS language and the answer was right there.
There ya go Neil. The tanker support that I am familar with is based on a 99 F550 regular long whell base with the 6.0 and the 6 speed manual transmission. carries 200 gallons of water and has a 1000 gpm pump. it is also 4wd and has a tenthousand pound front mounted winch. To use the winch they have to dump the tank.
The county does as well Doug but in some of Baltimore countys rural areas the engines might not be able to get close enough to draft from the source so the tanker supports come in handy. espicially since in the rural areas most odf the enignes carrie at least a 1000 gallons of water. If you have to take that across a muddy field you would be two days digging that out.
