Another question. I bought a standard volume oil pump and it came with 2 gaskets. One for the pick-up tube/screen and "the other for the pump to engine?" The instaructions say nothing about the gaskets. I have never installed ant\ oil pump on any engine with a gasket between the mating surfaces of the pump and block. So question is for some reason does a 302 require one at pump to engine? I'm sure the old one did not have one ther.
Thanks
I'm confused. I have talked to 4 ford dealer parts and engine service mechanics and all say there is no gasket between the pump and block on a 302 and most other ford engines. Also talked to a machine shop that handles a lot of ford custom hi performance builds and said he never uses a gasket there on fords or chevy's.
So I guess its a matter of preference or choice. My concern was the footprint of the gasket is a bit smaller than the pump base, and I feel that could become a break-off issue at the foot of the pump when torqing it down.
BTW,I took pics of the disasembly of the crank/engine area during tear down and and verified the original pump did not have a gasket at hte base.
Thanks
But I sure wou;ld not want to risk the oil pump base being cracked upon torque and or having it fail there later. Ford says no gasket. Ford says not to do it.
The parts illustration at ford has no gasket shown there. Maybe its the pump manufacturer that wants one to use it.
I checked the surface of both the pump and the engine and it is machined flat/flat. Like a chevy the mating surfaces if flat and true has no problem with loosing oil on the discharge side of the pump? A pump is a pump? true?
How much torque do you think you are going to apply to the bolts? I have never seen a pump break on a Ford at the mounting base with or without a gasket. I run the gasket because I want the oil to make it to the mains and not to spray back into the pan. Just my .02.
I use the gasket w/a little grease to keep it in place and make sure the pump drive retainer is in place to prevent the shaft from coming out if I remove the distributor.
