engine swap

I have an 84 b2 with a new 2.8 carburater engine in it unfortuantely the body on the truck is totaled and i have found a 88 b2 with a good body but a bad 2.9 fi engine i want to swap the engine fron the 84 to the 88 what kinds of problems am i going to run into and can i swap the intakes over to make the 2.8 into a fuel injected engine with the parts from the 2.9 any help that you all can give would be great

The 2.8 and 2.9 intakes and other parts will NOT swap, with only a few and I mean VERY few exceptions. Making a 2.8 a fuel injected motor with 2.9 parts is a no-go. Swapping an older engine into a newer truck can also be illegal. Sell your new 2.8 and get a rebuilt 2.9, if you absolutely need a new 2.9. What is 'bad' on it? Your only other option is to install TBI fuel injection on the 2.8 which would require ripping out pretty much all of the 2.9 engine harness wiring. Any other questions? Hope this helps.

the 2.9 threw a rod out of the block and it is not illegal in Kansas to swap engines at all as there are no emissions laws thank you for the help it looks like i will have to keep the carb set up on it which is not a problem

Define "totaled",.......Seems it would be easier to swap sheet metal from the 88 to the 84. Body work is FUN!!

Nothing worth mentioning. I would make the 2.8 a duraspark conversion though. I am getting the 1985 wreck I bought to pass emissions and then converting it.

i hit a concrete culvert at 45 mph with the front end it twisted the frame as well as destroying the entire drivers side when it fell onto it however the engine trans and transfer all survived as well as did the new radiator i had put in less than a year before lol

Ah. So your main 'problems' are going to be switching over from EFI-type to carb-type fuel delivery as far as the gas tank and lines go and swapping over all the engine harness wiring and ECU. Not sure if you can make the 2.9 wiring work - only way to verify that is to get the ECU pin-outs for both trucks and a wiring diagram and compare and figure out what needs to be modified if you can go that route vice swapping the entire engine and computer harness(es). Again, not my cup of tea, would be easier to install a rebuilt short block 2.9 than swapping engine and associated pieces and parts IMO, but.
