if your familiar with the 4.9 i6 motor then you will probably know what im trying to explain. under the power steering pump, there appears to a a compressor or something for the air conditioning. the pully on this part that spins with the belt is getting way too hot. i think the pully is shot. it is making noise and smoking alot when the truck gets warm. i think i am going to replace the entire compressor. how hard will this be to do? im not worried about having ac, it doesnt work as it is. has anyone else had a problem like this before? all suggestions are appreciated. -thanks
The compressor should only have like 2 bolts going into it, it's easy to replace, BUT you will have to recharge the cooling system if you want the A/C to work again.
Which could get expensive.
when the compressor started to fail it smoked alot and smelled like clutch. i thought my clutch was done. my father said that these compressors have a clutch in them and it oculd be in need of replacement. i will probably replace the entire compressor...i dont think i want to omit it. what should i be looking to pay for a used one? i saw a rebuilt one on ebay for $75
IF your AC is not working and you don't plan to get it running, the best approch is you remove the AC compressor and reroute the belt. That's alot cheeper than getting a AC compressor just to use as an idler.
