my a/c compressor or the clutch blew on my 96 351 bronco today. the pully still turns but the clutch itself got hot enough to melt the rubber caps on the end of it and partialy melt the belt. im not sure what went in it.
im no mechanic but i was wondering if there is anyway to get around not using the ac at all. i never use it anyway.
i just dumped almost a grand in parts and labor into this thing over the last month and a 1/2 and im not feeling like digging into the pocket any further. any help would be great.
If you were running the a/c when the clutch fried then the compressor could be trashed and locked up or dragging, or you could have a restriction in the high side of the refrigerent circuit causing high head pressure dragging down the compressor, or your out of refrigerent and the oil migrated out of the compressor and it is tight from no lube. Remember compressors wear out like anything else and so do clutches. If the bearings are good in the clutch unhook the wire from the clutch and you should be good to go, but no a/c. You can remove the clutch with a special little puller and see if it is the clutch or the compressor, clutch is a lot less $ than a compressor. When the clutch is off if the compressor turns with little resistance chances are it may be the clutch.
well i took the old compressor off today and the bearing is toast. pretty much the heat destroyed the rest of the compressor. the clutch is all blue and has flakes of burn stuff on it.
i called the local parts place and they dont carry them (the bypass pully) all thought they list them on thier web site. i think i might of gotten a kid or somthing when i called.
So it was just the bearing on the clutch.....or what? I know you said you dont *need* the AC, but if its only your clutch you can replace the entire thing for like $50, and I think with the Summer coming on I would hang on the the AC a bit longer.....well at least where I am from the mid summer is just too hot for no AC especially with the K9's I have to transport.......they HAVE to have AC and plenty of it.
it doesnt get to hot up here in ny.notthe last two summers anyhow. my dog doesnt ride in the truck much. lol hs a big baby.
Here in NYC Metro area.....the humidity is a killer, and I think the lack of green/wooded land and over abundance of concrete and stuff makes matters much worse.
well i fixxed it.simple job. i went and gotthe bypass pully and mine also dodnt come with any bolts.also bought a new belt and she is as good as new now.
thanks for the help.
