I just looked at my starter after reading your post. I'm afraid I may have the same issue as you if the starter fails, except for removing the mount brace. GRRRR I have a quality mini starter recommended by bullit, I hope it lasts forever.
The old Cyclone headers on my 66 F100 4x4 have no problems with the starter or the engine mounts, but the down side was that the passenger side came in 3 pieces and had to be fit around the engine mount and then put togather and mounted to the engine. Starter is clear and does not over heat from the headers.
