Please ID this axle...

Here's a rear end I got recently. I think it's from a mid to late 80's F250 4x4.

What kind of axle is it?

Is it stronger than a Dana 60?

One of the axleshafts is missing all the bolts. Can I use Grade 8 bolts?

The tag says 4L10. What type of differential is used in the limited slip application?

How strong is the limited slip differential?

What's an axle like this worth?

Some pics...

10 bolts on the diff cover= sterling 10.25 axle

tjc is right. It's also a full-floater And it looks to me it is from an 88 or 89 with the speedo sensor thingy hooked up to it.(the electrical connector)

That speedo thingy sensor is for the ABS system. It physically looks like a D60, but I guess it could be a D70 also. Either way, there are a good many of them around, but who knows what someone would pay.

How many bolts are on the cover? Also, where do you fill this thing? I don't remember any D60s NOT having a fill plug on the cover. I think that tjc has the number of bolts backwards. My D60 has 10 bolts....I just looked at it. After a second, closer look, I would say that it is Ford 10.25. It is a very strong rear end - Similar in strength to the GM 14 bolt corporate and the D70. How much is it worth? You aren't going to get rich from having one. The local yard here in Wasilla, AK charges $375 for a completely functional full floater out a dodge, ford, or chevy. There are by no means rare at all.

I would say based on the ABS sensor sticking out of it, this unit is from a f250-350 from 1987 through about 1999. There made hundred of thousands of them - if not millions.

i just went out and stuck my head under my 88 also.
the D60-70 has 10 bolts, and the sterling 10.25 has 12 bolts.

TJC,

I get things backwards all the time. For some reason it is so easy to do. For example a BW 1345 is completely different than a BW1354. By god I can't ever remember which one is which. One came in a 3/4 ton and one ton, the other in a ranger. It happens.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll use this axle instead of my Dana 60.

Does anyone know if grade 8 bolts can be used to replace the missing axle shaft bolts? Or do I need special bolts?

I guess you could tell for sure by looking for the 60 on the web of the center section. Looking at the pics it is a 10.25. I feel like the dummy here, so dont you guys feel bad.

I would bet that the same length and diameter grade 8 bolts would work just fine - but seems like it would be pretty easy to go to the local yard and just pull ones from a full floater. I don't think that they are reverse thread - if they are that makes it a little tougher to get them at the hardware store. Either way, there's plenty of them out there; it's not like they would be hard to find by any means.

They are the same thread from side to side because I "borrowed" a bolt from the left side to hold in the right side axle shaft. I can check some of the yards around here, but there isn't much to pick from in them.

Well, you should get some new ones then. Like I said, take the bolt with you and go shoppin! I bet you find something equivelant at the local hardware store. I always put the anti sieze stuff on mine so they come out a little easier later, but I don't know if that is recommended or not.

They are standard g-5 bolts, g-8 not neccessary, Tip, get the longest bolts w/lockwasher you can use w/o bottoming out.
