I have a 73 f100 4*4 with a 390 that needs new exhaust. Ive been looking at headers and was wondering how some of these long tubes fit in a 4*4, if they cover up the starter or any other clearance issues. Flowtech has some ceramic coated ones advertised for 4wd. Is it worth the extra money for the coated ones?
The coated headers have to be run thru heat cycling to cure the coating.. and they will go away after awhile...Unless its a race truck your not going to get any real Bennys out of running a coated header...I'd just buy a set thru Summit..a set of Hedmans..and call it good..Last I looked they were in the hood of $160
so can you still get to the starter after they are installed. Is the gain in performance really worth all of the hassle, doesnt sound like a lot of fun.
Not so much a problem with the starter, more the pass. side motor mount. Its run right through the 2nd and 3rd primary.
So even if i buy the headers that are supposed to be made for a 4wd am i still likely to run into the motor mount or anything else? Thanks for the replies.
I just installed a set of Sanderson FF427 ceramic coated headers on my '68 F-100. Worked out great. Very great quality. They are a little close. The only issue was my trans cooler lines (mine are a little bent up anyways) and you can't get the starter out without taking the passenger side header out. The collector flange is parellel with the oil pan flange. My truck is a 2WD though.
well I have run Full length hedmans on my 70 F250 2Wd... Since 1974 on my 395"er..and even tho its a tight squeeze for the starter...after a few starters being burnt out from heat saturation..I finally got a starter that lasted some 30 years and is still in the truck today..and its a reman starter From Chiefs out on the west coast..
I have never had to loosen up the Pass side to drop the starter..It just takes a little wiggle room and a tilt and it drops right out... I have only used 2 sets of gaskets with those headers..once when first installed, and the second time when I installed the motor after the rebuild... and I dont use heat wrap on them...and they havent ever rusted even being back here in Southern Va for 17 years.. But i keep em clean also... JMO.
Yes,two wheel drive is different than four wheel drive. The headers I got were only welded on two primaries on the passenger side,I guess for ease of installation.I still had to take a inch and a half notch out of the perch though.
