my drain bolt threads look almost stripped out at the head of the bolt, looks like someone overtightened it .the dealer replaced it but i wasnt around to see the oil pan threads if the bolt is shot would the oil pan threads be shot also? the truck is still under warranty, they do all my maint.should i have them drain it so i can see it with the shop foreman?
As long as it is not leaking, I would wait until it is due again and take it back to the same dealer. They should have documented the mileage when you brought it in.
A valve style replacement is one of the best mods you can do to your truck. No HP gains, but it sure is nice in the driveway, and most mechanics can use it with out screwing up.
Most of the time, when someone overtightens the oil drain plug, the only damage done is to the plug. This ONLY pertains to an OEM Ford plug, as the plug is made of considerably softer metal than the nut that is welded inside the pan. The torque called for on the plug is ONLY 10 foot pounds, which is only a pinky tug on the end of the 16 millimeter wrench. Most of the gorillas at the dealerships or the quick oil change places will pull that wrench enough to lift themselves off of the ground--That's the problem.
Talk to the serivice manager and tell him what you saw when they handed you the old plug. Also, tell him that his people have been the only ones changing your oil, and that he should tell them that 10 foot pounds is the limit on a plug with the captive rubber gasket--not hanging off the wrench and lifting themselves in the air. The plug should be able to be turned all the way in by hand until the rubber gasket touches the pan--if a wrench is needed to turn it, the nut in the pan has been distorted by the "gorillas".
yes it is a ford plug i had a spare in the glove box , had for years now for that just in case....the service manager knows that they are the only ones that works on my truck, i have a piece of paper on this truck since it was on the lot.
I use a fram suredrain system, it is a little smaller package than valve. It is very slow when draining the oil, but it has both a shrader valve inside and an o-ring cap.

Is that the one where the hose length attaches to the plug to open it up? (I was looking at something like that at my local parts shop, but was wondering how it compared to the Fumoto that a tube can connect to.)
Anyone have any thoughts? Sorry to dig up such an old thread - was up for an oil change and wanted to dbl check how tight the plug needed to be. :-)
