We need a little more information before we can respond to your question. What engine do you have? Are you wanting to replace the OEM cats with high-flow cats? What do you consider to be "mid-range" in terms of cost?

Based on your profile, you have low miles on your truck so I would not replace the cats. The Gen1 (1999-2004) Super Duties had a very restrictive Y-pipe that narrowed down to around 1.5" at one section. I would take the truck to a muffler shop and have them cut out that section. Using a DI/DO muffler of your choice (FlowMaster, Magnaflow, etc), I would run dual exhaust tubes from the cats to the muffler. Now, the lengths of the exhaust tubes to the muffler will not be equal but the DI/DO muffler will mimic an X-pipe/H-pipe to some degree. Then have two exhaust tubes run from the muffler to either the front of the rear passenger side wheel or out the back. You can use two mufflers (SI/SO) but it will cost more $$$. Depending on the other performance add-on's you have or plan to install (headers, high-flow cats, CAI kit, tuner, etc), you can either use 2.25" exhaust tubing for the stock setup or 2.5" exhaust tubing for the modified setup. 3" exhaust tubing is not recommended unless you plan to install a super charger.

Let us know what you decide to install and post pics!

not to hijack this, but why would 3" pipes not be recommended? I can see they would be a little overkill with out a supercharger as 2.5" would never really have that high of a back pressure without a S/C where they would need it, but wouldn't it be better to get the 3"s to have future compatibilities?
