I had to do the same thing to get my starter off (took the armature & housing out). I tried EVERYTHING that everyone suggested here to get to that darn 3rd bolt and couldn't get it to budge. I even went out and bought a new - short/swivel socket just to get to that bolt, and it still wouldn't budge. I replaced it and put some anti-seize on the replacement.
Didn't matter that I destroyed the (bad) starter; I had purchased a new starter with no core charge anyway, so I just scrapped the old one with the rest of the scrap copper.
You can start the top bolt with your finger and then you can get a short socket use I belive 8" of extention 3/8 drive and it will work.
I would cleen the bolt up good and make sure it will run in and out of the hole easy before you mount the starter.
Most I have changed had 1/2 in heads on them making the top bolt a little easier to get on but it is still possible with the 9/16 (you just have to hold your mouth just right).
