Bought my brothers 01. I needs batteries and possibly a starter. Batteries are 4 years old and starter is 7. Oreily told me they have two, 2 bolt or a 3 bolt. I looked and the truck has a two bolt starter BUT there is a third bolt hole that is not being used. Did he put the wrong starter in?????
Ether starter will fit.
My OEM is a 2 bolt , and the starter on it now is a 3 bolt.
I would buy the 3 bolt lifetime warranty with $10 core charge. Pay the $10 and keep your starter for a rebuild.
This gives you a spare starter.
BTW In Edit ,if you click Go Advanced , you can correct starer in post title to starter. (Not trying to be a SA)

Thank you sir, I didn't notice that. So the three bolt will work. My 95 is a three bolt. I bought that starter at Oreillys, new, and it has a lifetime warranty. I've used the warranty three times now. And Ive had great luck with their batteries also, no prorating
As stated, both work. I believe the original on my 01 was a 3 bolt planetary gear reduction starter. The one I have now is a 2 bolt offset gear reduction starter.
Both work good. Most do notice that the 2 bolt offset gear reduction starter spins the engine over faster though.
There's two sizes of Nippon OSGR the larger I feel is to much torque, the smaller one/2.5 kw p/n 028000-5884 starts Our truck in signature great here in Northwest winters, dont get China Knock offs, the OEM Mitsubishi PLGR is a great starter, started Our truck for 210k & is our spare now,new or reputable shop rebuild is the safest way to go,auto parts store units is very risky.
On my truck the 2 bolt cranked noticeably faster than the 3 bolt ever did (even early on in it's life). Many have experienced the same thing. And on my truck, this was OEM 3 bolt and Parts Store 2 bolt. Although, I did not monitor cranking RPM before and after to give a cold hard difference.
Too many other parts come into the equation here to make it truly "fact". Build quality of the starter would be a main one.
As I said, either one works fine. The 2 bolt just worked better on my application.
