doing ok. in case you haven't heard, i got me a new job with a local small paving outfit.
the bossman treats us like gold.
i now work real hours. no more 15 hr days, and am now only driving 120-150 miles per 8 hr. day compared to the 4-500+ miles per day at the old place.
the down side is that with only 8-9 hr days, i am only making $800-$900 per week instead of the $2000 plus at the old place.
but with the house only having 4 payments left on it, i can live on the lower pay with ease once it is paid off.
how by you??
have you gotten all settled in back home yet??
I do remember reading about your new job. I've been lurking here, just haven't been posting. Congrats. Its nice to be appreciated.
On me..no comment. All I can say is, it needs to get better.
i worked today in a gravel pit with walls on 3 sides and in a machine without a fan or ac
never even stopped for lunch, so 9 hrs
... yeah seems soft
Yep,some have to brave up and keep going
I seldom ever ran a machine with a/c or enclosed cab.Only our pit loaders or the newer draglines had such
In my younger days I was happy to have a canopy or even an umbrella on a machine to keep out of the sun or rain ( a rain storm felt good on a hot day) and some cool brew waiting for the end of a long day
the guys would work if we ask them to Ray, but standing on and working with 350+º asphalt in 100+º weather tends to make the laborers pass out from heat exhaustion.
i also never had A/C in anything at work besides my pickups untill the past 10 years.
as long as i am moving the heat is no big deal.
it only gets to be a bother when i am sitting.
Luckily I never had to work with the paving crew unless I volunteered to help out and I did if they were short handed. But in sunny south Fla if you delayed paving because of heat nothing would be paved from May to October
That's one business I never got into other than a small patch job or a driveway apron
I'm biased, I grew up on a horse farm doing fence work in the summer. Got a little older and found a job as a welder wearing full leathers in a brown steel building in FL's hot and humid summers. (Clocked 100+ deg regularly, and 105 on a couple hot days.) We'd complain about it... after all, it's gives working guys something to talk about... but we'd also keep hydrated and kept working. (I will admit, when it cooled off at night it made working doubles more pleasant.)
Now residing in Socal... and can't help laughing at the folks that want to complain about the heat any time the temp creeps above 80. Yes, there are times when it gets hotter... but it's so dry all you have to do is step into the shade to cool off.
To be fair I have met a few great guys out here who could work... As for the rest of them... they've never known any different... but it doesn't make them any less of a weenie. Sure explains a lot.
On a side note... since when did "not knowing any better", "everyone else is doing it", "I couldn't be bothered", "I've decided that I am too important" or "hard work is beneath me" become excuses for being lazy, apathetic, spineless, wimpy, inept, cowardly or otherwise useless... as people, citizens or employees for that matter? (Not to mention all the folks that are here illegally having all their needs thoughtfully catered to.) lol
Edit: I have to tip my hat to the tough sob's that work the paving crews in FL. Those guys could pave a freeway through hell if there was a place to keep their beer cold for when the shift was over.
What a heck of a night/day, so far.. Yesterday we started phasing on the power, smoked a couple of motor starters, a transformer, and I dont know the rest as of yet. We started working on it last night ( had my boy and dog with me ) and power goes off again..
Once we get the power back ( 50 mins ) we start trying to get everything on line..I left pretty confident that my second shift was going to succeed..oh well.
Most everything is on line this morning..
