I guess plan B is just start taking things apart and see if anything looks broke.

Can anyone tell me if you plug in an external monitor to a laptop, does it start working right away, or do you have to hit some buttons on the computer to make it recognize the new display?
Trying to figure out what's wrong with my daughters laptop. You can hear the computer come on, but the screen stays black. Plug in an external display and boot up, still nothing. Plug in the external display to my laptop and it doesn't work either. Just need to know if the old monitor is broke or if I'm dealing with operator error.

Press it, then F4 at the same time.
It will cycle through the outlets.
One mode will be the laptop screen only.
Then both screens.
Then just the external screen.
The laptop that I use for my daily stuff, including this message has a dead screen and I use an external monitor for it.
Works great.

Down next to the Ctrl and Alt keys there is a "FN" key.
Press it, then F4 at the same time.
It will cycle through the outlets.
One mode will be the laptop screen only.
Then both screens.

Works on mine but not on hers. I guess whatever part sends the signal to the screen also sends the signal to the plug, or there's something else wrong. I guess I'll try my luck with google and see if I can figure out what part I'm trying to find.

There is a cable I guess you'd call it that goes from the monitor to the rest of the computer. Sometimes it can get broken from opening and closing the laptop. I'm hoping that's all it is. If it is try looking for one on Newegg. They're pretty reasonable price-wise.

He NEEDS the job though I havent been able to get in touch with him so far, and Im kinda hoping hes got a good reason that he didnt show up.
EDIT: Jake (my employee) called me back he just over slept...there went his job. Im kinda friends with the kid though so I dont know how that will end up..
