Worst work commute?

I was exchanging instant messages with a friend/coworker this morning, and he jokingly asked how my commute went. I told him that this morning's commute was the worst ever. After letting that hang out there for a minute or two, I commented that my commute was interrupted when I stubbed my pinkie toe & his neighbor on the leg of a couch that had gotten moved a little bit. My eyes hadn't quite adjusted to the dark, and I happen to like the dark...normally. We both got a bit of a chuckle out of it.

You see, I am lucky enough to work (primarily) out of my home office in the basement. I am not really bragging here (Okay, maybe a little bit. ), but it got me to thinking.

I spent 5 years out in Camp Pendleton, CA--roughly located midway between San Diego & L.A. While stationed out there, I listened to countless horror stories & references to folks that commuted from San Diego to L.A. or vice versa.

Personally, I cannot even fathom having a commute like that. In non-peak hours, that would clock in at around a two hour drive...give or take. In rush hour traffic, that commute could pretty easily double in time.

So, the question came to mind....who has the worst commute?

Before I was laid off last month I drove 80 miles each way. I went from southwest of Ann Arbor, MI, to northeast of Detroit. I had to contend with rush hour traffic each way. On my last day of work it was snowing. I left home at 6am, and I arrived at work at 9am, only an hour and a half late. The few times I made the drive without traffic it took 1:20 each way.

Twenty five minutes each way. I get to watch the sunrise on my way in the morning, the sunset on my way home during the winter. Generally light traffic. Could be worse.

My commute now isn't such a big deal, but when I was working in San Francisco, it sucked monkey muffins.

I had to take the bus to work as I couldn't afford the gas to drive every day (new employee, not what you'd call high on the pay scale). So, I'd get on the bus each morning at 0415 hrs, and arrive at the office at 0620 hrs. I didn't have to necessarily be in the office that early, but if I took the later bus, I wouldn't make it on time.

On the way home, I'd get on the bus at 1610 hrs., and typically not get home until 1830 or so. Fridays were the worst, as I'd get on the bus at 1610, but there would almost never be a seat, and I'd have to stand for the entire trip, and I'd get home between 1930 and 2030 hrs. One particular Friday that I had to stand on the ride home, it took over 5 hours as there were a number of accidents on the 101. Needless to say, I was thankful as hell to leave California...and get more pay.

My commute is a whopping 10 minutes and 5 miles. Before we moved the shop last summer it was 20 minutes or a half hour depending on traffic.

I live three miles from the plant where I work. I grab a coffee and two tacos every morning at the little store by my house and then cruise on into work.

Yeah, that's a tough commute.

Commuted 50 miles each way for about 20 years, south central New York.
Later commuted 15 miles each way Baltimore vicinity (I 95, 197). 50 mile commute was not bad, the 15 mile commute sucked.........
Anyone ever hit I 95 - I 695 in rush hour? Horrendous!

Same here. Getting around in the snow wasn't the problem though, it was the truck and trailer that slid into the ditch that shut down the main access to the industrial park where I work.
