My '87 6.9l lost 4H a couple of years ago and we've managed without it. But, yesterday there was a big clunk(while in 2WD) and the rig would not move itself. We had to put it in 4L to get it home.Wondering if that sounds like a broke transfer case to you all or what. Forward and reverse gears work fine on the main tranny. If it is the transfer case how expensive does this sound and would it be worth it to just get a replacement from the wrecker.
you most likely have a bad shift fork in the transfer case
this transfer case is simple in design
get a shop manual remove the rear case half and check the 2 high 4 high fork it is the one closest to the rear and easy to replace much cheaper than a salvage unit
but like i said get a repair manual first
