The E4OD in my 1999 Ranger XLT 4.0 liter chatters when shifting into and out of OD under light throttle conditions. This started at just over 100K miles. The trans has been serviced regularly.
Sounds like classic torque shudder. During light acceleration in 3rd or 4th/OD you will feel a shudder or chatter. During hard accleration or coasting you won't feel this. Usually happened at 40-55mph on my F250.
Torque shudder is usually the torque converter lockup clutch going bad. It will start to slip which will overheat things(check fluid for color and smell) which will cause debris to flake off into the fluid which will eventually cause damage. A symptom of damage will be intermittant harsh shifting.
Sometimes a fluid change will fix it. Some people say some of the additives will work. In the long run you will need a new TC or a rebuild if you let it get too far along.
You might see if you can pull the tranny code, if there are any, and see what it says. Usually the computer will increase the pressure to try to force the clutch to hold. This may also account for harsh shifting.
Changed the fluid with no change in the chatter. I thought it would fix the chatter, but no such luck. No tranny codes. The only code the truck ever throws regularly is the IAC. The speed sensor died once, but other than that the truck has been problem free.
