I have a 1994 F250 HD 4x2 with the 460. The 3-4 shift has an intermittent chatter. The chatter is most pronounced at light throttle shifts. I sometimes get the chatter out of overdrive when the torque converter locks up. The truck has 124,000 miles. I don't have any history as I bought the truck 2 months ago. I'm going to drop the transmission oil pan for inspection and oil change. The oil is not burned but does need changing.
I think the torque converter is the issue as the other gears shift properly.
My question is to consider just replacing the torque converter or go ahead and do a complete reseal/clutches/bands in the transmission, and the upgrades discussed in the various threads on this board? I have good automatic transmission skills, rebuilt several over the years. I have a good workshop with a lift.
With that many miles, you are over the typical lifespan of an E4OD. If you have it out and can afford it in time and money, I would do the rebuild with upgrades.
My F250 has the same chatter along with an occasional 1-2 upshift problem (when tranny gets warmed up). I'm going to opt for the complete rebuild. My thoughts are that I don't want to foul up a new torque converter when something else in the tranny decides to fail. Considering the mileage on it, that could be any day now.
