Have you cleared the codes to see if they came back?

Yes ive cleared the codes and nothing changed.

Last night i met up with my friend who has a 1999 f 450 7.3 and took his PCM (computer) out of his truck and swapped it out with mine. It fired up great and i drove it down the road and it drove perfect again. I could hold it to the floor as much as i wanted and it didnt throw it into "limp mode".

But i think the year models defenintly had diferent computers because with his computer my tach., and trans temp gauge on the dash didnt work. Also i had a check engine light, a check guages light, and that dang overdrive OFF light was flashing the whole time i was driving it. Not sure if all this was because of his computer but I drove it about 30 miles and it still ran great before i gave him his back.

Does it sound like i have a bad computer or did his computer just not no how to put it in limp mode and the problem was really still there.

I'm not a pro, but had the same problem with my old 95. The comp.detected a slip and went to fail/safe mode (limp) put in a selenoid pack and it helped.... for a little while.
Ended up with a rebuilt trans. (next time I will check to make sure the tc is for a diesel)
I did take mine to a trans shop.

Dusty...

I'm soo sorry I'm missed this thread. Your computer is bad, no two ways about it. I looked long and hard and diagnosed my truck over the course of a month with this same problem. The cruise control shouldn't work either.

Inside the ECM something that has to do with the voltage control and comparison goes bad. This I believe is caused by the glow plug relay going bad. Either when it goes bad or we try to fix it with the wrong part. I don't know because my alternator went bad at the same time too.

however, the ECM compares voltages it sees to expected values. This turns up the EPC solenoid because as the ECM applies more current to the solenoid and compares the current on the back side of the circuit it thinks the EPC is shorted or open because it is comparing it to a wrong value. Same for the cruise. The cruise control uses resistors to multiplex the signal. Comparing the voltage drop for the cruise to the expected values doesn't come out right and the cruise doesn't work. (this is all deduced from my diagnosis, not any actual programming information)

If you look at both the reference voltage and the vehicle power voltage on a scanner they should be much lower than they actually are. This seems to be a problem with the 02 and 03 7.3 ecms only as I could find no evidence of this happening with earlier models. I confirmed the vehicle voltage through a voltmeter at the battery and through the voltage function on the HEIC (hybrid electronic instrument cluster).

Thanks Chris my cruise control does not work as a matter of fact. Didnt understand that either. What is the best way of going about fixing this?

Right now i have the original solenoids going to the glow plugs and the air intake heater. I just put the AIH solenoid on the glow plug and the glow plug solenoid on the AIH. I have the little wires on both of them disconected and rapped in duct tape right now because i was afraid they were grounding out the computer. I am afraid if i do get another ECM the same thing will happen.

It may have been just because i put the wrong type of solenoid in. Can the right solenoids (if bad) destroy another computer or will it be fine just to hook them up the way they are supposed to be?

Where should i get a ECM from? Could i get one in a junk yard, ebay, or ???? Does it have to be a 2003?

The vehicle power voltage shows 10.12 volts but a voltmeter on the battery terminals shows 14.5 volts.

As I see from your newest thread you have confirmed the problem, and one that I spent some time myself figuring out. I would replace the GPR with one of several upgrade ones. I put in one from napa, an st36. It's just like the original, fits the same, but is taller and has a higher current rating. Reasonably priced. The stancor is more money, and not available readily unless you order it. I also don't like how it fits compared to the st36.I wouldn't chance it. Fix the GPR right.

I found my replacement PCM on car-part.com. Yard shipped it to me for around $100. Best way to go, they are hard to find and expensive anywhere. Ebay was a no go for over a month. You have a DPC-462 series computer. Others will work like you experienced but won't work right.

You currently should have code VDH5. I had VDH4 and was happy with it, happier than VDH5. There is one more revision past yours, NWM0. You can use any DPC-462 series computer, just the program will be different. For the best fit, go with the same revision as yours or else you may feel a difference in the way it drives.

Here is a list and the corresponding part numbers:

2002 NWM0 2F719S0A10 7.3L F-250/350 DIESEL - AUTOMATIC 49S

Here is the only listing I could find for you on car-part.com in Florida. This is VDH3.

I'm lookin at an F550 at an auction and the OD light is flashing too. I don't know if the cruise works or not because I didn't look at it that hard. I really like the truck but if the tranny needs to be rebuilt I dont want it. But from what I see here it may just be the computer. Is this the case?

All you can tell when the light is flashing is that something is wrong. It could be a loose wire, it could be a bad sensor, or it could be a dead transmission. You can't tell without reading the codes and doing the diagnostics.
