I've been wanting to ask the same question. I'm worried about water getting into some computer or electrical component and causing me allot $$$$$$$ problems. But I'd like to keep the engine looking detailed. I'm subscribing.
The engine is made to get wet. It should handle the water just fine as long as it is not submersed. I have never done this to my deisel, but have hosed down my wifes and didnt have any problems. Obviously you would need to cover your air filter. Maybe someone else will chime in with more info.
I cover the alternator and the PS pump with plastic grocery bags, grab a bottle of Simple Green and spray the block and surrounding components. Then I used a garden hose on low pressure to rinse. It might take some scrubbing of the boots and other oily surfaces to get some of the thicker gook off. My engine bay looks pretty tidy now.
Hmmm. . . maybe I should try some of these methods. . . I usually dissassemble as much as I can. . . get in there with some clean rags and a can of this awesome degreaser/cleaner and hand detail it. . . very very time consuming. But damn does it look nice!
Timmy
Edit: just a pressure wash won't really do much. . . you must degrease! Pressure wash will blast the heavy stuff off. . . but the oil stays and will collect dirt and dust very quickly.

Reason: YARRRRR
Don't use a pressure washer. Degreaser or Simple Green and a garden hose will clean the engine compartment nicely. There have been plenty of forum posts in the past where people have used a pressure washer under the hood, then couldn't get the engine started. IMO there's no need to take that risk.
