AOD tranny won't shift when cold
I have a tranny out of an 89 f250 4x4 that i put into a 78 f250 4x4, tranny shifted fine for about two weeks and now it won't shift out of first gear for about a mile. After that it shift and drives fine until it kools entirely back down. I changed fluid and filter didn't help. any suggestion.

An AOD has a lot of valves. I've only been in a couple. Or one twice. Not sure... but I would suspect a valve is binding in the VB, and the expansion when it gets warm allows it to move. Anything happen when this occured. How is the fluid? Maybe you could drop the VB and see if any of the valves stick when it is cold. Also, throttle valve adjustment might cause this problem too.

It could also be a sticking governor. In fact, I'd even wager close to a dollar that it's the governor sticking.
You can get to the governor by removing the extension housing, but in a 4x4 that involves removing the transfer case.
