Question turbo ?

how do you know when the bearing to ur turbo are going out cause I have a 99 powerstroke and it started to get a high pitch whine only when I'm driving but as soon as I stop it goes away it doesn't do either when I rev my engine

Pull the intake, let the motor cool off (important!), grab the end of the impellar shaft. A small amount of side to side play is normal, any in and out play is bad. The wheel should not be able to touch the housing at all, if it does its rebuild time.

Pull off the intake tube at the turbo and look inside. Check to see if the compressor wheel has been making contact with the housing. Also grab the shaft with your fingers and give it a wiggle in all directions. There should be zero in/out play, and hardly any play side to side. The wheel should not be able to touch the housing.

If you find excessive play or signs of contact, the turbo is gone. If not, the sound might be coming from somewhere else. It's very common for the belt to squeal on these trucks, either from a loose tensioner, bad idler pully, or just a glazed belt. Many times, the squealing gets worse under load, and can't be duplicated by just revving the engine at idle. So just some food for thought there.

If it does end up being the turbo, get a rebuild kit from Ron's Turbo Service. SUPER easy to rebuild, and it's also a good time to gut the EBPV. Ron can also help you out with parts for that too, if you don't want to modify your own outlet & pedestal.

If there is any significant play in the shaft repair it, a little is normal but under boost at higher RPM the shaft and compresor wheels can move a lot. If there is any abnormal movement it will wear out very quickly.

If you can't make it hit it shouldn't hit when the truck is running.

Since I am selling a slightly used stock turbo that would probably work for your application (shameless plug), I can tell you that your turbo is toast.

Seriously, take the intake off and check for play. Wobble the impeller around and see if it wiggles a lot or not. See if it moves in and out or not. Hopefully you have done the CCV mod so we can see if there is oil in the turbo area.

Just to throw this out there, are you sure the high pitched whine you're hearing isn't just the sound of the turbo working as it's supposed to? Upper rpm's or having the truck under a load will make the turbo whine or whistle as boost builds. There's no noise revving it in idle because you're not building any boost.

This is true and if it is an earlybird (early '99) or has the wicked wheel in it, it will whistle more than most stock SD turbos.
