well...i hate my truck right now. i've concluded that i have a clogged fuel pickup in the tank. i've been temporarily fixing it by blowing about 140 psi right before the fuel pump back into the tank but it seems like it is getting worse and worse. I think it is from running wvo in the summer and it has just been "cleaning" the 230k miles worth of crap in the tank or I got a bad batch of wvo or something. anyways i'm going to drop the tank this weekend, delete the strainers in the fuel tank and add an inline fuel filter before the pump. anyone know of a good filter i could use that is relatively inexpensive and something i could buy at napa or autozone??? i've looked at the itp kit but don't really have time to wait for it to come in and will be doing it myself this weekend. anyone have any tips or insight???
I got the same filter as Robin. My tank was surprisingly clean. You might be able to get an equivalent part from other auto parts by doing a cross reference on the Baldwin part#.
thanks guys i will take that part to the parts stores and see if they can cross reference or have something similar. can anyone tell me how long taking the tank out and putting it back in will take?
A couple of hours, give or take to drop the tank. But, I would double check your pump 1st. .. Take 2 lengths of fuel hose and connect one to the intake and the other to the outlet of the pump. Using a container of diesel, see if the pump is pumping normally by turning the key, but don't start it... and pump into an empty bucket...
I use that cheap Fram from WM too. You can also get it at AZ, O'Reilly's, etc. I think it's called the G3, and has a little pigtail piece of fuel line and a couple clamps in it. Here's what it looks like:
And here's what it looked like after it saved my butt when I got a bad batch of fuel:

That's the good part about using a transparent filter. Easy diagnosis of dirty fuel.
Robin,
Is the inlet & outlet of that Baldwin a little small? I bought one, but didn't put it in because of it being a little loose on the fuel line. The Fram fits on the 3/8ths fuel line perfectly. That one looks like it might be 1/4".

Yes it is. Double clamped though, it should be alright. On another note, Robin I have mine installed the opposite way that you do, I think, do you think that would be a big deal?
I'd run it the correct way. It's designed to handle flow in a certain direction, plus you'll be able to see the junk on the outside of the screen easier. But don't turn yours around -- get a new one. Might be stating the obvious here, but just want to make sure...

Like Joe said^^^^
It may clog quicker. The other way allows for larger particles to sorta 'settle out' instead if going directly into the filter element.
Anyone know if they make one like that Baldwin in a 3/8ths inlet/outlet?? I like the screen idea better than the paper media, but wasn't sure if the 1/4" inlet/outlet is more of a restriction than maybe I'd want there. I want good flow to my soon to be bigger sticks, and will be putting in a Walbro shortly as well.
