Sheepish question

OK; due to poor documentation, I need to rely on FTE expertise once again. What sort of hardware clip holds the FORD gril trim pieces, and the F-1 as well to the cowl? I started assembly of the grill yesterday. I had it all apart and "straightened" every piece. When I went to re-assemble. I had to twist/bend the upper portion of the vertical support, that stiffens the grill pieces. I guess that's "normal".

Tom, not sure on the "F-1" as I haven't gotten that far, but the "F O R D" letters on the upper part of my '50 grill are held on with the push type friction nuts. The studs on the letters are not threaded.

Tom,

I would guess that they would be the push on type as Gil just suggested or the stamped self tapping style nuts. Something like this;

The F-1 emblems on the side of cowl I used tubular nuts. I got them at NAPA. They slide over the studs then you snap them into the holes:

For the grill trim I use these:

The FORD on the front should be threaded and use squared "U" brackets:

Some of the F O R D letters use the U clip and screws as in Bob's diagram, others use the push on nuts. I have had one of each. I am not sure if it is peculiar to one year or another.

My '52 did not have the U-brackets. Dennis C. sells a push-on nut for them, I believe. As I recall, the type of threaded fastener Bobby showed wouldn't work on mine, just not a standard size. Mine rattle, I just didn't want to push too hard on the clips I used.

One think I did when I installed my trim was to make pads out thin foam rubber type material. The reason I did this is because one of the first areas that start to rust is the area behind trim that had rubbed the paint off. Also, when you install the trim you tend to snap it on and the paint gets gouged, just a little that's good enough to allow water to get at the metal. I used a thin material that was very dense so it didn't act like a sponge and hold water. I've had it on my truck for over 15 year without any noticeable streaks or rust.
