I need some help replacing the heater core on my 98 2.5 ranger. I have done a search but can't find much detailed information on how to replace it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
On Rangers, it's really easy. Just make sure the cooling system is clean & flows well afterward. If not, get it flushed. To start, remove the clamps of the heater hoses & slip them off. Replace hoses if any wear on them while you're at it - with new clamps. Pull the black interior clips from the carpeted cover under the right underside of the dash & pull the core back & down. Reverse that procedure & you're done.

Reason: typo
I certainly must have written a few dozen posts extolling the merits of a Chiltons manual-soooooo much info for so little!! Check in to getting one-not that expensive when you think about the amount of info you WILL have, and to find out about things you didn't know about your Ranger..It will take you step by step on how to make this repair, and many others.....
I'll generally agree about that. It has its flaws & missing bits, but it IS worth the price. I finally found a copy locally at the closest Murray's for '91-99 in the shrink wrap no less. Paid $20.
I would agree, as nice as this forum is, you still can't beat having a good service manual. Sure the illustrations are sometimes wrong, but they contain specs, and the complete procedures and everything. I have both a Haynes and a Chiltons for all my vehicles.
Unfortunately for the OP, his is a '98, and so when it comes to heater core replacement, that's going to be a fairly tedious repair. That's because on '95+ Rangers the dash must be removed (or at least pulled back far enough) in order to gain access to the core. There is no easy access panel like on the earlier Ranger models.
There are some good instructions on how to pull a '95+ dash in PSKSAM2's post here:
