Hi! I have a 98 ford expy and my heater core broke while in a trip. I cut the hose connecting to the heater core and directly place it where the discharge hose of the heater core is connected. I solve the leak/smell issue and completed my trip. For now, I haven't replace yet the heater core but noticed a coolant leak beside the engine block. I suspect that this might be coming from the intake manifold gasket. Would this be cause of by-passing the heater core?
Appears all you did was bypass the core. IMO that should not cause any new problems. The outlet pressure may be higher because a restriction (core) was removed. That still should not cause a problem. Check that your bypass connections are tight and that your quick fix is not leaking. Is the leak on the same side as your plumbing alterations? If not, then you have a separate problem. Good luck.
Thank you for the reply. I did check my plumbing and looks good. The leak is on the same side where the hoses are connected but quite far considering that the leak was visible in the middle of the block. The alteration was near the firewall. Again, thank you.
There is a short water pump hose directly behind the water pump on top of the block on the 4.6L. You would have to remove the intake manifold to access it.
