98 Expedition heater core replacement

Any one know any shortcuts to replace the heater core in an 98 Expedition?

Must the dash be pulled completely?

Thanks, so I guess since I see no leakage around the hoses in th engine compartment, and when I turn on the heat I get a big blast, it's a for gone conclusion that the core is leaking?

Hate to miss something before tearing it all down.

Was this a problem in these? what about a "stop leak" product?

You would be better off bypassing the heater than using stop leak. Stop leak plugs up things you dont want plugged up, and contaminates sensors.
A good pressure test will tell if its the core. It will drain out the AC drain. If you get a large volume whiff of antifreeze when you turn on the blower that is a sign of bad news, especially if you get an oiiy coating on the windshield with defrost. Ive seen quite a few of them go bad on the F150/Expedition. Not a rampant number, but they have thier share.

Not really, but a pressure test is relatively cheap. The chiltons manual only shows .3 hour for the job, and some radiator shops will do it free. Or you can shop around for a Stant pressure tester, but why do that when you wont be using it to make money? It will cost as much as the test or more.

BTW in looking at your suggestion and looking at my Expedition, would you perform this test via the plastic overflow canister?

Also, since the vehicle must be hot for the thermostat to open and allow flow to the heater core, would the followin be correct pressure test messure:

Connect pressure equipment to overflow canister,
Turn ignition on, turn heater to on position heat
Apply 25lbs of pressure.
CHeck for leak via AC over flow.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Ed

It can be hot or cold, as the heater is bypassed by the thermostat. Pressure test from the overflow since it doesnt have a radiator cap. 20 lbs is sufficient and just keep it pressurized for about 15 minutes... it should start running out the AC drain by then. You will need a special adaptor for the screw on overflow though.
