83 bronco carb solution questions
My problem is that this is a CA model and has the MDU and feedback carb. The original carb has been replaced with a feedback unit by the last owner. The carb tag was not retained so, I'm not sure what of original specs.
My solution is to replace the carb with a non feedback carb and run the MDU in open loop.
My questions are 1) has anyone else done this and knows what other problems come up. 2) Buying the carb online, is National Carb a good place to make the purchase.
Thanks,
Chris
You should start by converting it back to a Duraspark ignition system. I am using a DS2 dissy I bought new on ebay with cap and rotor for $50… with a GM 4 pin module and the stock square coil currently on your engine.
If you run in open loop as you mentioned your gas mileage will be poor and you will lose power. Mine was always in FIXED TIMING mode or about 10 deg BTDC….. never had any advance.
I am still running with a feedback carb. See photo below.

Try out the search function for, Duraspark, DS2, DSII, GM 4 pin module

lots and lots of stuff already posted, it will keep you busy reading for a long time.
Check out the electrical forum as well for info.
Changing out the carb is not a bad idea, just not first on my list.

Thank you for the reply.
The CA 83 bronco has a Duraspark ignition system, with the normal DS vac adv dissy. The MCU cumputer unit is connected to the Duraspark ignition system and carb feedback control and has little input on timing. Mainly the MDU controls the feedback carb with input from an O2 sensor and timing thru vac. sensors.
From what I have read in the manual when the MCU is in open loop all timing is controled by the Duraspark ignition system with vac. asst.
From this I'm hoping that by using a non FB carb and the MCU in open loop that I will end up with basically a 49 state setup for the 83 with ignition and timing coming from vac. adv and the DSII ignition.
At least thats my hope.
I would consider getting a DS2 module with the blue plastic wire relief if you what it to be like the 49 state version.
Does your wiring harness look like this??

This is the stardard DS2 wiring harness used with the blue DS2 module.
hope this helps
good luck
